British rower Sarah Outen is attempting to be the first person to cross the Pacific on a vessel with no machine power except her own – she plans to row from Japan to Canada. This is part of the 27-year-old’s “London2London” round-the-world journey, attempting to travel the whole way only by bike, kayak and rowing boat.

Her journey was earlier thwarted by the unpredictable North Pacific weather, stopping her journey 560 miles off the coast of Japan in June 2012. She will be flying in to Japan on Wednesday where she plans to restart her journey from Choshi on April 1. Before leaving England, Outen had said that she was feeling a mixture of nerves, excitement and sadness as she travels away from her family and friends again in Rutland. But she thinks it’s a good idea to have “a bit of fear and apprehension” for the grand scale of the ocean.

“I am looking forward to activating the plan we have been putting together for months, getting out there and sharing all the stories,” she adds, as the build up to the restart of her expedition has been hampered by the flu and tonsillitis three weeks ago. But Outen spent a whole afternoon being put through her paces on Monday and says declared herself nearly back to 100 per cent. Before being stopped by the weather, Outen had arrived in Japan in November 2011, cycling more than 10,000 miles and rowing 1,000 miles through 10 countries.
